We were able to take a nice long trip to Oregon over Christmas this year. We started our trip on December 21st which also happened to be our 10 year anniversary. Fortunately we don't feel the need to be doing something special on our actual anniversary, because a long drive, fast food, greasy dinner and low budget motel in Pendleton (with a pool!) with two little hooligans didn't feel all that special. That isn't to say it was a great day though, the boys were excited (especially Emmett who understood the reason for the drive) and they travel so well. Any big roadtrip is an adventure and of course they loved swimming at the motel.
The continental breakfast got us going for day two and we drove a couple hours to Hood River. We had reservations on the Mt. Hood Railway Polar Express train and plans to meet up with my mom, brother, aunt and her grandson. We had kept this a surprise up to the point we pulled in to park and Emmett saw the train and asked if we were going on a train. It was his first time on a train and he was pretty excited. We had also built up to it the past couple weeks by reading the Polar Express, watching the movie, and Emmett's preschool class even had a Polar Express party.
My brother was possibly the most excited and got his picture with this cute elf.
Santa visited for a nice amount of time with all his biggest fans.
Emmett proudly displays his souvenirs: punched ticket and Santa sleighbell
Emmett said his favorite part was the hot chocolate (which he hardly drank) but clarified that it was actually when they played the hot chocolate song from the movie, which he had been singing the past couple days.
After the train ride we continued on our way and decided to stop in Salem to surprise Jim's sister and her family. That was a great choice, the boys were so happy to see their cousins and to have some time to run around and they were good sports about being surprised.
We hit the road once more to drive to Jim's parents house for dinner and to stay. The boys were excited to see their grandparents and Emmett was excited to remind Ezra where all the toys were kept.
