Family Trip to Park City May/June 2023

The last day of school was field day, my birthday, my parents flew in, Emmett reffed two soccer games, Ezra had game one of a soccer tournament, and Elliott had a double header football game.  It was a busy, but fun day!  I got done helping with field day around noon and then went and got my parents from the airport.  We stopped by home with their things and to say hi to Ezra and Elliott, and then the three of us went out to lunch at the Snake Bite.  After lunch we came home and I worked on packing and prepping food for our trip the next day.  Emmett was home from school by then too.  After a while I took Emmett to the soccer complex to ref and I picked up my birthday drink from Starbucks.  Jim and Ezra went to Ezra's game and Elliott, my parents and I went to football.  Elliott's team was undefeated and they won their first game of the double header and lost the championship game right at the end.  It was a great season, but a little intense for 8 year old football.  Elliott's team all got medals, but the team that won got championship rings.  Elliott enjoyed learning and executing plays, giving a receiving "shout-outs" after each game and practice for things done well, and we all loved hearing the boys doing their team cheer.

Ezra's team had a good game, but lost.  We all met up at home at about 8:30 and ate some pizza that Jim had picked up and I opened my presents.  The next day I took Emmett to the soccer complex to ref a game and then came home to finish up packing and take the dog to board for the week.  We all got to go watch Ezra play a tournament game (they lost) and Emmett play a tournament game (they won).  We all went back to the house to finish packing and then I set off with my parents and Elliott for Park City, UT.  Jim and the other two boys had 2 more games and a BBQ as part of the tournament and they met us down there late that night.  We had a good drive down and it looked like we narrowly avoided some pretty bad thunderstorms.

We met up in Park City with my sister and her family.  We stayed in condos that were just down the hall from each other and had a great time.  Her kids are 2, 4, and 6 and mine are 8, 12, and 14, so it was fun to see the cousins interact.  The first full day we went to a park and the kids swam.  We did dinner all together and celebrated some birthdays.  On day 2 we went to the Utah Olympic Park and the Alf Engen Ski museum.  We got to see some people practicing ski jumping into a pool.  The next day we got passes to do all the "extreme" activities there.  There was an alpine slide, zip lines, ropes courses, air bag jumps, and a drop tower.  We had so much fun!  All three boys were brave enough to do every activity that they were tall enough for.  Some of the ropes courses were very high, and the girls in charge of the drop tower didn't want to let Elliott do it (because if someone chickens out they have to call in mountain rescue), but he assured us that he was brave enough and he was!

On Wednesday we went into Salt Lake City and did the Hogle Zoo.  I love watching the gorillas and orangutans and the elephants are cool to see.  The polar bear was the star of the show, he was swimming laps in his pool and kept coming right up to the glass where the kids could see both below and above the water level.  He is a 1200lb male and just huge!  The kids also liked the playground and splash pad.  After the zoo my parents and sister's family went back to the condo and our family stayed in SLC.  We went to the Tracy Aviary, Scheels, In N Out, got Feastable chocolate bars from 7-11 and then went to the Real Salt Lake vs. LA Galaxy soccer game.  We got to the game nice and early and did lots of the pre-game activities like a bounce house obstacle course, futsal, cup pong and corn hole.  We watched the teams warm up and watched the LA Galaxy beat RSL.  Afterwards there was a drone show that was really cool.

On Thursday we hung out around Park City.  The kids swam, played board games, ping pong, and foosball, we went to the outlet mall, we went to downtown Park City, etc.  There was a lunch BBQ provided by the resort that day.  Each night we did our dinners all together.

Friday morning my sister's family left for the airport early.  My parents decided to stay around the resort and my family went to Lagoon, an amusement park in Farmington.  We had so much fun at Lagoon.  It was a fairly cool day and many of the Utah schools weren't out for summer yet, so the lines were short all day.  We worked our way up to the big roller coasters and Ezra was the bravest in the beginning, but then Elliott couldn't get enough of them.  Emmett is not a big roller coaster fan, but he found ones that he really liked and even tried most of the big ones.  We went pretty non-stop from 10am-10pm except when we waited out a thunderstorm in the afternoon.  The weather was cool enough that we never even did the waterpark area.

Checking to make sure the bricks are real before a magic show

I didn't make it on "Bat" with my family...which meant I had the front to myself !

Saturday we packed up and drove back to Idaho.  We stopped at the Hill Aerospace Museum and got lunch at In n Out.  We got home and got our dog and my parents got to stay for a couple more days before a successful flight home.
