May 2023

Elliott's 2nd grade class did a project called Kids Town.  Both of his brothers did it in second grade too, so we practically felt like experts.  It's sort of a culmination project that puts together what they've learned about money and economics.  Elliott decided to run for mayor and make a poster.  Ezra helped him write his speech and practice.  I think 8 kids in his class ran for mayor and his friend Hailey got the most votes.  It is officially a family tradition to run for mayor and lose.  He was very disappointed, but we encouraged him and he ended up having a good time with it.  He was in charge of the grocery store with a couple other kids and they had made signs, collected empty food containers, priced them, and sold them to their classmates.  They were able to buy things at other stores with money they had earned for behavior and academics.  Elliott bought some books, popcorn, and stuffed animals.

Ezra played soccer with the same group of kids he has been with for a couple years.  They had a few new players as well.  Jim was the assistant coach and spent most of his time at games keeping the substitutions organized.  Ezra plays soccer beautifully and smart.  He's not the biggest and strongest, but he is fast and his skills are pretty advanced.  He gets pretty frustrated with his teammates because they don't all play it as a thinking sport, and he just doesn't love it like Emmett does.  We will see if he continues with it or decides to try something new.  If he moves on I will miss watching him.  He does say that he wants to referee when he turns 13.

Jim's parents came to visit us in mid-May.  They got to see one of Ezra's soccer games, part of one of Emmett's track meets, Elliott's flag football game, and 2 of Emmett's soccer games.  It was great to have them visit during such a busy time and Jim's dad helped him figure out some issues with our sprinkler system.  We also had a fun dinner out at Dixie's Diner.

Emmett had a double header in Twin Falls.  Jim's parents came to the first of the games there on their way home, which they took a scenic route through Nevada to see something new.  Emmett and I had time to stop at Shoshone Falls on our way home and it was really beautiful.

Other than his possible concussion, Emmett had a pretty successful soccer season.  His team won about half of their games.  He still feels very passionately about playing soccer and wants to be pushed to be better.  With as competitive as he is, he maintains an amazingly positive attitude.

In late May we had a big storm.  I had just dropped Emmett off at soccer practice and there were some dark clouds and thunder in the distance.  He called to say they were cancelling practice and it was starting to rain hard by the time we got home.  the rain switched to hail just about the time that Jim got home from work.  Since we have experienced a damaging hail storm before, we scrambled to fit 2 cars in our garage that was in the middle of being reorganized.  The hail didn't get big enough to damage anything, but it did block storm drains and there was crazy flooding, especially on some road underpasses nearby.  Many people had flooding in their homes, we felt lucky that our basement stayed dry and our garden seemed to survive ok too.

Our house was plastered with leaves from the storm

We got a zoo membership to our local zoo.  We haven't done that in quite a few years, but since we were planning a trip to the zoo in Utah, we decided it would be fun to do this year and it gets us in for half price the the Hogle zoo in Utah.

Ezra got to participate in the district wide track meet.  I got to go watch the first little bit and go to work a little late.  The teacher's assign events to the kids and Ezra was assigned the 800m race and standing broad jump.  I watched the 800m and he finished in the middle of the pack.  We found out at graduation that he won the standing broad jump!

Ezra's 6th grade graduation was a special day.  He is a great student that often comes home with his progress report and tells me he has "no As"....that's because they are all A+.   He was honored for his hard work, first by finding out that he had won the Hope of America award from the Kiwanis Club.  This is awarded to one boy and one girl from each 6th grade class in the area.  When Emmett won this award his teacher had given me a heads up, but Ezra's was a total surprise.  We are super proud that his teachers and peers hold him in such high esteem.  He also got an award for completing the 40 book challenge, the Presidential Academic Gold Award for all As for the year, Math Counts award and his track meet ribbon for winning the standing broad jump.

Ezra and Elliott both did lots of fun activities their last weeks of school.  Elliott got to go to the zoo for a STEM day and the museum of Idaho.  Ezra had his track meet, a field trip to the aquatic center, graduation, and a water fight.  The very last day of school was a field day that our PTO was in charge of.  We had spent many hours planning for it and it went really well.  Ezra went early that morning with me to help set up and then I stayed in the gym with a group called "Flip and Twist" that do American Ninja Warrior type obstacle courses.

One other thing I will want to remember from this month is that our neighbors husky broke the gate on our fence THREE times.  The first time he got in our yard (at 2am) and our dog, who was in his crate inside, started barking. Jim went to let our dog out and realized that this other dog was in our yard.  He got the dog out and blocked off our gate so our dog would be safe in the yard and then fixed our gate the next night and let our neighbor know what had happened.  A week or so later the dog tore our gate apart again and we noticed the next day.  This time the neighbor fixed it for us.  The third time it happened Jim fixed it and fortified it and let our neighbors know.  We were pretty much ready to call animal control.  We found out that the dog has also killed chickens in the neighborhood and a cat.  We actually haven't seen the dog since, so they possibly got rid of it.
